Overview

In collaboration with the Cal Poly Pomona Department of Theater and Dance, I designed a series of posters for their 2024-2025 production season. These posters were intended to be displayed throughout campus to promote three different plays, each requiring a distinct visual identity that captured the themes and tone of the production.

Role: Graphic Designer

Duration: 10 weeks

Concept & Strategy

I was provided with the scripts but had complete creative freedom in developing the poster designs. My goal was to create story-driven visuals that would engage students, faculty, and theatergoers while effectively conveying the mood and essence of each play.

To ensure each poster authentically represented its respective production, I began with an in-depth analysis of the scripts and used a combination of creative brainstorming techniques:

  • Mind-mapping to explore themes, symbols, and key moments.

  • Mood-boarding to develop the overall aesthetic and tone.

  • Subject research to understand relevant historical, cultural, or artistic references.

Development

I created multiple sketches for each poster, refining my ideas through group critique and feedback. Once I identified the strongest concepts, I determined the best medium to bring each design to life. Depending on the needs of the project, I used a mix of photography, illustration, and creative typography to develop unique visuals that reflected the spirit of each play.

Results & Impact

This project allowed me to combine visual storytelling, graphic design, and theatrical interpretation into a cohesive series of promotional concepts. While my final posters were not selected for the department’s official marketing materials, I played an active role in the critique and refinement process for the chosen designs. My insights helped shape the final visual direction of the selected posters, reinforcing the collaborative nature of the project.
